Descrption: One of the Midwest's most highly acclaimed rail-trails in terms of popularity, design and economic development. The Monon has seen investment approaching $1 billion along its route through downtown, the future City Center area, and Central Park.  Plenty of services are available near downtown Carmel, where the Arts & Design District offers dozens of unique shops & cafes in a traditional village setting.

The Civic Square area is a great place to picnic. The Monon Center, a state-of-the-art water park and fitness complex at Central Park, straddles the trail and is always alive with activity. A skate park is also adjacent to the trail at Central Park. There are two playground areas accessible by trail: Meadowlark Park, west of the trail just north of Main Street (through Stonegate Apartments); and Lenape Trace Park, east of the trail just north of the I-465 overpass (see map below). Carmel has had a very good record for providing off-street detours on the Monon due to construction. The trail is treated as a major transportation thoroughfare and has speed limits.

The popular 146th Street sidepath is at the north end of the trail and runs east/west between Spring Mill Road and SR37 in Noblesville.  Clay Terrace shopping center is accessible by following this path to the east about 1/4 mile.  In general, Carmel is a very walkable and bicycle-friendly community with miles of paved trail & sidepaths, many of which are connected together (see below maps).  There are also bike lanes on 116th Street between Keystone Ave. and Hazel Dell Parkway.

From the far south end of the trail at 10th Street, head west on the sidewalk for a few yards, then turn south toward Massachusetts Avenue to get to downtown. St. Clair Street is the recommended route to get to the northwest quadrant, where there are several trails to follow through White River State Park and adjacent to the Indianapolis Zoo.
