Thanks to all who responded on my recent question about the ballast on our trail.
Next question: Below are specs for handrails on Highway Bridges. We have three very similar bridges each approximately 35 feet long that cross small streams, and one large bridge that crosses the Tippecanoe river. The river bridge is a project that will require real money sometime in the future. My question is, does anyone have specs different from those below for handrails on a trail bridge. Our trail is a multi-use trail and the bridges will be used by both bicycle and equestrian traffic.
If you would like to reply to me directly you may send e-mail to bruce at sugardog.com.
a.. AASHTO Code
Rail systems on trail bridges frequently used by children must meet the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. This code requires a handrail at least 42 inches high for pedestrian traffic and at least 54 inches high for bicycle or equestrian traffic. A 6-inch sphere must not pass through the railing in the bottom 27 inches and an 8-inch sphere must not pass through the area higher than 27 inches.
