[IndianaTrails] Governor's press conference on trails

MessageTo All - To add to Steve and Emilys comments. About 20 years ago the Ohio Gov'nor openned a section of a highway (to a new factory) and a section of trail (at Dayton). A number of people (100??) showed up of the highway ribbon cutting - all officials, construction workers, etc. At Dayton, hundreds, thousands, etc cyclists and hikers showed.

Because politicians live by numbers (of people), this event moved the Gov'nor to create a state trails initiative.

Hence, the more trailists who show, the more Gov Mitch is
empowered to entrail the state.

Be there: Vandalia Trail and Vestal Rd and Acquatic Center at Plainfield, Wed 10:00 am EDST.

  Adding my comments to Steve's...

Some of you remember meetings over the past ten years as we lamented the lack of interest and support from the highest levels of government. In fact, in some cases, I recall comments from some of you about the blatant opposition to various trails from those with power and influence.

We have an opportunity Wednesday to strengthen this new support for trails, just by showing up for a few minutes and taking advantage of an opportunity to speak first hand with the Governor. It won't be possible for everyone, and for some the distance is just too much, but there are plenty of trail folks nearby. I encourage those of you who can, to come. Let him leave with a lasting impression that trails are absolutely significant and an essential component to all those "quality of life" aspects that everyone seems to enjoy mentioning these days. This is a chance for you to walk up to the Governor, shake his hand and tell him how important trails are, and how much you appreciate some support finally. The best way to have a lasting impact on his thinking is for trail advocates from every direction to come and tell him. Even if you don't get to say something, you can show him just by being there. He'll notice. So will the press who will be along with him that day.

The Summit on May 31st will have limited spaces and limited exposure for individuals with the Governor. This could be your best opportunity for influence, whether you say anything at all or just be there.

The issue is trails. We all know we need them, the public wants them, and we can do them in Indiana as well or better than anybody. See you Wednesday morning.

In confirmation of the message sent earlier by Kevin Heber, Governor Daniels will be holding a press conference to announce an upcoming Indiana Trails Plan Summit and to highlight the effort to develop a trail plan for Indiana. The news conference will take place on Wednesday, April 26 at 10 AM along the Vandalia Trail in Plainfield near the new aquatic center at 651 Vestal Road. The Vandalia Trail will be part of the cross-state National Road Heritage Trail.

This is a public event. It will be an unprecedented media opportunity to show support for Governor Daniels' keen interest in advancing statewide trail development. We are trying to get as many people to attend to show their support for trails in Indiana. Please forward this notice to others so that we can draw a big crowd.

Thanks and hope to see many of you on Wednesday!
