Being an avid golfer that has played on hundreds of course around the US it is my experience that GC Superintendents not only discourage but mostly prohibit not golfers from using the cart paths. Mainly due to liability issues but members of private courses (key word PRIVATE) do not want the distractions that pedestrians and bicyclists would provide and have paid high membership fees for that privilege. I have run into residents near golf courses using the course cart paths for recreation purposes and from a golfers standpoint this is not only distracting but dangerous from the "trespassers" stance. If the trail is adjacent to a golf course try to design adequate barriers to prevent well meaning hikers from entering the course and visual barriers so that golfers are not distracted. The 'fence' or other barrier needs to be high enough so that errant shots don't hit someone. The closer the path is to the fence the less like that this will occur. Face it some activities are just not compatible.

Hi Everyone, and Happy Holidays,
Does anyone have experience with trails along private golf clubs?
Specifically, I am looking for:
- contact info of golf pros who could testify about having a trail
next to their course; do they have any user conflicts or site concerns?
- design elements that were able to ease worries about trails and
golf - fencing (are trail users/neighbors happy w/aesthetics & function?),
landscape buffer
- testimonials from trail users, trail and golf course neighbors,
and especially golfers about having these two uses adjacent to one another
I would greatly appreciate any information or input you could provide.
Thanks,
Lori
