Greenways Foundation Names First Executive Director
Organization Moves Forward with Vision for Statewide Trail Development
INDIANAPOLIS - The Greenways Foundation has named Ron Carter to serve as its
first executive director. Carter's leadership will assist the foundation in
more fully realizing its strategic vision of promoting the development,
enhancement and use of Indiana's greenways.
Carter, a Carmel city councilor for 11 years, a former Greenways Foundation
board member and an avid biker, is passionate about bringing trails to
Hoosier communities. When he ran for office in 1995, he was dedicated to
revitalizing downtown Carmel and developing parks and green space, as well
as converting the Monon Railroad from a "linear junkyard" to a rail-trail.
Since that time, millions of people have traveled the Monon Trail, which
spans more than 15 miles from 10th Street in Indianapolis, through Carmel,
to Carmel's northern boundary at 146th Street. Under Carter's leadership,
Carmel's 23 acres of parks have grown to nearly 600 acres.
With experience in business, marketing, advertising, public relations and
municipal government, Carter is positioned to be an effective spokesperson
and lobbyist for the greenways movement.
"Ron's well-rounded expertise and talents make him uniquely qualified to
lead the foundation, as we work to catalyze the development of greenways
throughout Indiana," said Matthew T. Klein, board president of the Greenways
Foundation. "The board is excited for Ron to take the foundation's mission
to the next level."
>From Carter's point of view, economic development is the biggest benefit of
greenways, a message he will convey as he advocates greenways development
throughout the state. "Greenways are an integral part of the whole
quality-of-life 'package' - good schools, parks, libraries, infrastructure,
etc.," he said. "Trails and greenways help make Indiana a better, more
complete place to live and more attractive to business owners and their
employees."
The Greenways Foundation wants to take advantage of the momentum sparked by
Gov. Mitch Daniels' comprehensive statewide trails plan announcement last
year. The foundation hopes the creation of the new executive director
position will assist the state in realizing the goals of the trails plan.
