[IndianaTrails] Retrofit ideas for suburban shopping areas?

Hi Lori,

Do you have one specific location in mind that you're trying to retrofit
or are you thinking more of a corridor improvement? You might wish to
reference our Glendale Special Neighborhood Study, which made
recommendations for making the mile around Glendale Mall multi-modal.
The SNS also made recommendations, and developed design guidelines, for
improving the bike/ped connectivity to the mall through the sea of
parking. You may review the report at the follow link:
http://www.storrowkinsella.com/projectwebs/0022_sns/index.htm
<http://www.storrowkinsella.com/projectwebs/0022_sns/index.htm> and
reference the Glendale Block concept for the parking lot detail. If
you're thinking about redeveloping a suburban corridor to become
multi-modal (or at least bike/ped friendly), please feel free to contact
me and we can discuss our Multi Modal Corridor and Public Space Design
Guidelines.

Mark Fenton is associated with the National Center for Bicycling and
Walking (www.bikewalk.org <http://www.bikewalk.org/> ); we had him in
for a Walkable Community Workshop Series a few years ago, which was
extremely informative. You might also check out Dan Burden's Walkable
Communities, Inc. website for photos http://www.walkable.org/; Dan is a
very interesting individual who takes photos unlike anyone I've ever
known! If you can't find it on Dan's website, it probably doesn't
exist! :-)

Good luck!

Subject: [IndianaTrails] Retrofit ideas for suburban shopping areas?

Hello All,

Does anyone have ideas or photos you could send on retrofitting suburban
retail areas for bike/ped access? We all know the scenario in Indiana -
we build beautiful new trails to link with destinations, and we reach
the lovely strip malls surrounded by seas of asphalt and rip rap. I have
done lots of research on pedbikeimages.org but have found only examples
of urban downtown areas and new developments. Can anyone share success
photos of a retrofitted retail area in the suburbs?

Thanks,

Lori
