I have read a lot of the reference documents (skimmed might be a better word). I have, I believe, all the info I need regarding bicycle route signs (from MUTCD) on existing roads.

I am looking for just some simple info regarding the post supporting guidelines for these signs. And although I may have missed them, I have not seen any references. Like, post length, gauge/weight/thickness/pds per foot (there appears to be several ways of meaureing the metal thickness of sign posts). How high - long should they be? 8 foot 10 foot appear to be 'standards'.

>From discussions, readings and observations . . I am arriving at the following guidelines . . . Someone must have placed signs on roads before us and maybe they could comment.

Signs should be (must be) placed above line of sight of motorists therefor sign should be 5 1/2 feet or higher at crossing intersections. Post should be 2 1/2 feet or more into the ground (at or below frost level).

-Adding this up and realizing that there are low spots along side the roads leads to a 10 foot post.

-Galvanized is better than paint from a longevity standpoint.

-For the long post and some of the bigger MUTCD signs 12 gauge would be preferred.

-1 3/4 should be adequate

-Square is more versatile than U easily allowing 90 degree signs and may be be a little stronger, but are more expensive, .
