Thanks RV,
Glancing through the (MUTCD Sign Codes : What are the Standard Recommended Sign Heights?) pages, there was not a bicycle route sign (a designated route guidance for bicycles on established roads) in sight. So the assumption is, to follow the guidance for normal vehicle sign heights. Which certainly means that bicycle route signs cannot/should not be placed on posts supporting regular street signs unless these street signs are much higher than required and/or not in the line of sight of motorists.

Tom - here is at least one strong set of answers to your query. ~rv

What are the Standard Recommended Sign Heights?

Refer to the MUTCD which gives examples of how high the signs should be. With parking signs and street name signs the recommended height from bottom of the sign to ground is 7 feet when pedestrian movement is likely to occur. They don't want people walking into the signs. In parking lots, signs are usually mounted at lower heights. In many cases you'll see stop signs mounted at heights of 7 feet especially in urban areas for better visability due to obstructions like parked cars and bushes. Also signs at higher heights are less prone to vandalism.

      According to the MUTCD Standard:
Signs installed at the side of the road in rural districts shall be at least 1.5 m (5 ft), measured from the bottom of the sign to the near edge of the pavement.

Where parking or pedestrian movements occur, the clearance to the bottom of the sign shall be at least 2.1 m (7 ft).

Directional signs on freeways & expressways shall be installed with a minimum height of 2.1 m (7 ft). If a secondary sign is mounted below another sign, the major sign shall be installed at least 2.4 m (8 ft) and the secondary sign at least 1.5 m (5 ft) above the level of the pavement edge. All route signs, warning signs, and regulatory signs on freeways and expressways shall be at least 2.1 m (7 ft) above the level of the pavement edge.

Overhead mounted signs shall provide a vertical clearance of not less than 5.2 m (17 ft) to the sign, light fixture, or sign bridge, over the entire width of the pavement and shoulders except where a lesser vertical clearance is used for the design of other structures.

Refer to the MUTCD which gives examples of how high the brown series (recreational) signs should be. The above referenced link illustrates height and lateral positions of signs located within recreational and cultural interest areas.

Refer to the MUTCD which gives examples of how high the orange series (construction) signs should be. The above referenced link illustrates height and lateral positions of signs located within temporary traffic control areas.
