A SPECIAL WORKDAY STARTS THIS SATURDAY AT 9 AM

Volunteers interested in "wood decking" of the Stearns Truss behind Pizza
Hut/Dairy Queen in west Delphi are invited to get involved. Two portable
WoodMizer sawmills will be cutting planks from 15 White Oak and a three Red
Oak logs. One sawmill at each end of the bridge.

One job is the handling the fresh cut planks and drilling pilot holes in the
hardwood as the deck is nailed to the bridge stringers. Another is
assisting the sawyer at the mill. If you come bring hard toe work shoes,
gloves and durable clothing. Several other jobs are listed for those
interested in trails or flower bed renovation.

As the day progresses the 78 foot long historic iron bridge may see the
middle connected. Ultimately this will be a trail bridge crossing the
reconstructed canal. The 17 foot planks, in alternating 6, 8 and 10 inch
widths, will be laid tight. The oak will then dry to allow spaces for
runoff.

There will be a lunch at Canal Park for the volunteers at noon prepared by
the Psi Ote Sorority. The sawing of logs may last well into the afternoon
so those that come later will be welcome to relieve the morning volunteers.

CANAL VOLUNTEER CALL-OUT

Community CALLOUT for volunteers! On October 11, 2007, at 7:00 pm in the
Canal Center will be a meeting for all who wish to be involved with the
Wabash and Erie Canal. It doesn't matter if you are already volunteering or
would like to start. The meeting will last about an hour and refreshments
will be served. Door prizes will be awarded. Don't miss out on this
meeting.

There are many opportunities at the Canal. Whether you enjoy working with
an enthusiastic group or by yourself, we have a place for you. If you
prefer to be indoors or outdoors, we have a place for you. Whether you want
to work with visitors or only folks you know, we have a place for you.
Whether you are available 1 hour a year, or 8 hours a day, we have a place
for you. You don't even need to be at the Canal for some of the
volunteering you may want to do.

At the meeting we will be discussing several areas of volunteering.

1.	Historical Docents - There are volunteers that work with visitors,
as docents in the Interpretive Center, Case House, and old log school house.
Other volunteers lead school and group tours through the center or walks
along the canal or on a canal boat trip.
2.	Projects and Maintenance - Craftsmen volunteers create exhibits,
build bridges, move buildings and maintain our facility. This is a very
creative group who enjoy working together M-W-F. People of all skill levels
are welcome. This includes Saturday workdays.
3.	Canal Boat Captains - These people guide the pontoon boat along the
canal. We expect that in 2009 they will be operating the new replica canal
boat.
4.	Community Activities - This group of volunteers plan and lead the
trail walks, hikes and trolley tours. Other activities include Canal Days
in July, Halloween in October, Christmas in the Park in December.
5.	Support Activities - These are activities that support the Center in
many different ways. This includes gardeners for the flower beds,
seamstresses for costumes, computer input for the archives, publicity, apple
dumpling cooks, bakers for the holiday bake sale.

The meeting will answer your questions about how you can be part of the
energetic, enthusiastic fun group of "Canawlers" who volunteer.

All ages, all skill levels, all talents are wanted, needed and welcomed.
Come and make a difference with your spare time. For more information call
the Canal Center 564-2870.
