2-INDOT NEEDS TO HEAR FROM YOU BY NOV 2ND--SOME RESIDENTS ASK SIDEWALKS BE
REMOVED FROM GREENWOOD ROAD PROJECT:
Last week INDOT (Ind. Dept. of Transportation) held a public input meeting
locally to get input on the planned widening of State Rd 135 between Curry
and Stones Crossing roads. All public comment, at meetings or via email, are
being assembled into an input "transcript" that State officials will use as
they move forward. It's a real chance for YOU to have input. As recently as two
years ago, some of that project plan did not include any pedestrian
infrastructure alongside the road. But it now includes the addition of 5 foot wide
sidewalks. However, some residents spoke at the recent meeting to ask that
the sidewalks be taken out of the plan and said something to the effect that no
one would use them anyway.
Related to that, we would like to not only preserve the pedestrian
infrastructure that is planned but also see the planned "sidewalk" widened to 10 foot
wide multi-use paved pathway. This is in direct accordance with the MPO
(Metropolitan Planning Organization for Indpls) plan for pedestrian
infrastructure in the "donut" counties. "Their" plan in Johnson county was put together by
roughly a dozen Johnson county residents and officials from various parts of
the county and designates 135 in that area as a "pedestrian corridor"--which
means a place that will have enough development that we need to give people
visiting one business by car a way to get to another one a short distance
down the street without having to take their car back onto 135. And such a
pathway also ties into countywide trail planning.
If you support this idea, or just want to preserve the sidewalk going in,
please contact Rickie Clark, INDOT Public Hearings Manager at:
_RCLARK at indot.IN.gov_ (mailto:RCLARK at indot.IN.gov) or (317) 232-6601. DEADLINE for
public comment is November 2nd.
3-MAYORAL CANDIDATES TO BE SURVEYED IN ADVANCE OF NOV 6 ELECTION--send us
YOUR questions by Oct 23rd:
The Trails Advocacy Board will be surveying the general election candidates
in the race to be Greenwood's next elected mayor; and we will publish their
answers to our questions here for you before election day. Our questions, of
course, will center around pedestrian/cycling infrastructure issues and
recreation. We intend to probe each candidate's vision and planned approach to
these issues. The two candidates for mayor are incumbent Republican Charles
Henderson and challenger Independent David Payne. We realize of course, that
there are many issues upon which one must judge candidates--not just these
narrow issues--however, we hope that our survey will provide you one more layer
of detail in making your voting choice.
If you have a specific question you'd like us to ask, please email it to us
by reply by Oct 23rd, and we will do our best to incorporate it in the
survey.
