Subject
[IndianaTrails] Butler Trail PR Project

Dear Trails Friend:

Each semester, the senior-level capstone course at Butler University?s
School of Journalism selects three non-profit groups for which they
complete a semester-long class project. The project involves research and
planning to help area nonprofit organizations address a particular goal or
need. I am pleased to report that The Greenways Foundation was one of the
organizations chosen for this current semester.

When asked by the professor, Rose Campbell, what type of project we would
like for the class to work on; it was my suggestion that they produce a
complete public relations/marketing plan for use by local trails groups.
This plan, when completed, would be provided by the Foundation to trails
groups throughout the state to assist them in building support for their
trails project and to help them ?sell? their trails project to
stakeholders such as the general public, funders and elected officials in
their communities.

As part of their project, the students are responsible for doing basic
research, including a focus group. This focus group research, combined
with results from other types of research, will be used to identify
effective approaches to advocate for trails projects at the local level.

I?m writing to encourage your participation in this focus group, which
will take place on Monday, October 8, from 7-8:30 p.m., in Jordan Hall
Room 203, on Butler?s campus. Would you please help? A total of 12-15
participants are needed. Pizza, drinks, and dessert will be provided.

The focus group is a 90-minute discussion facilitated by two trained
(student) moderators. The questions generally are open-ended and designed
to elicit information, attitudes, and opinions from participants in regard
to the research goal described above. Participants should be active
supporters or leaders of trails organizations. Everyone from private
citizens to government officials and community leaders are invited to
participate, but the main criterion for inclusion is a keen desire to
promote trails projects.

Will you help by offering to be one of the trails supporters for this
focus group? Because of the October 8 date, we would like to hear from
people as soon as possible, at least by October 1. Please contact student
leader Nicki Parsons, at nparsons at butler.edu as soon as possible if you
are willing to participate and are free on the evening of Oct. 8. Your
help in the important project will result in a comprehensive package of
public relations materials that you and your fellow local trails advocates
can use to publicize the benefits of trails to your community.

Best regards,

Ron Carter
Executive Director
